Prevent and Protect

Conveniently located to serve New York City, Tribeca, and The Upper East Side

Summer is just around the corner, ladies and gentlemen! As the months get warmer, it’s time to dust off our sunglasses and store our coats out of sight. It’s also time to make sure we are prepared for the beach days, the vacations and the glaring sun. Here are Tribeca MedSpa’s tips and tricks for staying safe in the sun!

  1. Include an antioxidant in your daily skincare routine. Pairing an antioxidant serum with your sunscreen creates the perfect duo to combat sun damage. Topical antioxidants not only have anti-aging properties, but they can also reverse existing sun damage while preventing any future damage. Antioxidant serums allow your skin to soak up the nutrients it needs to protect itself against free radicals and other molecules that cause damage to the cells. Antioxidants also stimulate protein synthesis which accelerates cell turnover, correcting any existing sun damage. Typically, an antioxidant should be applied to the skin after cleansing and toning, but before any serums or creams. Stay tuned for a post all about Tribeca MedSpa’s most recommended antioxidants.
  2. Avoid prolonged periods of sun exposure whenever possible. Although sun exposure is harmful at all times of the day, all year long, the sun’s radiation is strongest during 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. Look for a shaded area to stay and wear a sunhat or baseball cap to reduce direct exposure to your face.
  3. Wear Sunscreen! It’s extremely important to make sure that your sunscreen is broad spectrum, which is designed to protect your skin against both UVA and UVB radiation. We recommend an SPF of 30 of higher. Applying your sunscreen 30 minutes prior to sun exposure ensures that your skin is prepped to combat the sun’s damaging rays. It is also necessary to reapply your sunscreen every two hours, or as the specific product directs. We suggest keeping a small bottle of rose water on you, that way you can cleanse the skin between applications rather than slathering on layer after layer. Sunscreen plays the vital role of preventing sun burn, which can double a person’s risk of skin cancer, particularly melanoma, over time.
