The Gym and Your Skin

We all know the benefits of a good work-out: calorie burn, energy boost, happy endorphin release, stress reduction, but sometimes hitting the gym can be hard on our skin.  Exercise causes internal heat, increased blood flow (which shows on your skin as flushing and inflammation) and everyone’s favorite work-out by-product: sweat.  While sweat itself is good for you, leaving sweat to air dry on your skin can result in breakouts.  This is especially the case when more of us are switching from big gyms to dedicated studios that focus on Spinning, boot camps, yoga, or Pilates, and often those studios don’t have showers.  So how can you have your cake, your Soul Cycle and great skin care too?  A little rose-water goes a long way to rehydrating the skin and Camille of New York Rose Water comes in a 2 oz spray bottle perfect for your gym bag.  Made from Organic Roses this product is naturally anti-microbial and anti-bacterial so a spritz over the face post work out is refreshing and protective.

Squalane

Squalane is a natural organic compound that is produced by all plants and animals, including humans.  When used in a cosmeceutical, Squalane is most commonly derived from shark liver or from plants (usually olives).  When found naturally in humans, Squalane is the most common fat and antioxidant produced in and on human skin.  It is a natural moisturizer, a good emollient and has antioxidant and immune-stimulating properties.  TriBeCa MedSpa carries our very own Squalane Serum as part of our two step hydrating system.  Our pure Squalane Serum is used as a moisture seal after our Hyaluronic Hydrating Serum (another naturally occurring emollient produced by our bodies).  Since Squalane is a larger molecule it works perfectly as a final step in your home care regimen, locking in the products to correct and hydrate your skin and locking out city pollutants.

Peels Have Come a Long Way

Chemical Peels can sound daunting. In fact, many people still mention the infamous ‘Sex and the City’ scene where Samantha’s post-peel procedure includes a large black hat with attached veil. The truth about Chemical Peels is a long way from a clever sit-com joke from 2002.

Whether or not you peel after your treatment is directly related to your skin’s condition. If your skin needs an exfoliation the formulation will cause more flaking. Whether you see flaking or not, the real ‘magic’ of Chemical Peels is what the treatment does for your skin on a cellular level. The formulation of TriBeCa MedSpa’s chemical peels speed up one’s cell turnover rate and leave clients with a luminous appearance. The glow that many patients begin to notice before they even leave the MedSpa is what makes Medical Grade Chemical Peels one of our most requested services.

PCA skin care is considered to be the top peel formulator in both the medical and clinical markets, their chief scientist and dermatologist Dr. Linder says, “People don’t realize that you don’t have to peel with a peel. They mistakenly believe that if you don’t peel, you didn’t get enough of a treatment. The opposite is true — as your skin becomes healthier, you’ll actually find that you peel less with treatments.” PCA Skin is identified in medical textbooks as the first maker of blended chemical products. This “new generation” of Chemical Peels favored by our Medical Aestheticians is highly individualized and can run the range of gentle to aggressive. In fact, many clients find that lack of peeling is a common and desired result.

It turns out that yet again, Sex and the City is pretty different from reality.

How do you feel about your neck?

So many of us forget to include the neck in our daily skincare routine until it has become a problem area. This oversight often leads to the neck showing signs of premature aging like dryness, wrinkles and horizontal lines or creases earlier than our faces. If you have concerns about your neck, you have many options to begin an anti-aging program on this delicate area. Extending the use of your products below your jaw line down to your décolletage will work wonders on both your peace of mind and your appearance. If you are ready to give your neck real tender, loving care, our Medical Aestheticians will let you know if a Chemical Peel, Fraxel® series or Titan™ Laser Treatment would be best for you.
