5 Tips for Transitioning from Summer to Fall Skin Care

Conveniently located to serve New York City, Tribeca, and The Upper East Side

In the summertime, New York air tends to be humid, which helps protect your skin barrier and keeps your skin looking and feeling healthy (even if it makes your hair frizz). However, once the weather starts to get colder, the air outside becomes dryer, and inside, heating systems have a way of making your apartment feel like the Sahara.

In addition to the changes in humidity that require a transition from summer to fall skin care, you also have to repair sun-damaged skin. Even if you’re very good about wearing SPF 30+ when you’re outside in the daytime, you’re bound to have gotten some summer sun in, and being exposed to extra wind, sweat, sea salt, and chlorine can wreak havoc on our skin’s health.

All of these factors add up to one big truth: As we move from summer to fall, it’s time to gift ourselves some serious skin rejuvenation. This is the time to slough off any summertime damage, invest in a sun damaged skin treatment, and get our skin prepped and ready for the winter months to come.

1. Lock In Skin Moisture With Squalane

Non-comedogenic, soothing oils like squalane pack a pig punch when it comes to locking in moisture. Our bodies naturally produce a version of this oil, but sadly, we naturally make less of it starting in our 30s, so instead, we can give our bodies’ natural production a boost with a high-quality, plant-derived version. Squalane is an ideal sun damaged skin treatment for repairing dry, scaly, and sunburned skin. The combination of hyaluronic and squalane rejuvenates the skin for a radiant youthfulness and helps prevent premature aging.

We recommend Camille of NY’s Squalane Moisture Seal and Khus + Khus’ Sen Face Serum.

2. Undo Summertime Skin Damage

From chlorine to sun exposure—not to mention Covid-related anxiety—the summer has been rough on all of our body’s systems. As is always the case, those stressors tend to have a serious impact on our body’s largest organ: the skin. That’s why it’s a great idea to gift yourself a session or three of important self-care (and skin care). Our Renew, Revitalize and Rejuvenate packages are specifically designed to repair sun damaged skin. A sun damaged skin treatment is ideal for refreshing post-summer skin, helping you look and feel your best for the fall.

3. Exfoliate Appropriately

Given that everyone’s skin is unique, there’s no exact guidance on the number of times to exfoliate each week, regardless if you’re caring for summer skin or wintertime skin. However, in general, exfoliating helps to replenish skin by sloughing off dead skin and removing impurities (that goes for both chemical exfoliators as well as physical ones).  By buffing away these dead cells, new cells can come in healthier and without obstruction. This process also improves the effectiveness of moisturizers as the dead cells block moisture from the layers of live skin cells that actually need it, and for many, wintertime weather calls for serious moisturizing.

4. Incorporate A Lip Treatment

In the summer, we’re always at risk for forgetting to put sunscreen on our ears, which is why the ear is considered an extremely high-risk location for skin cancer. But in the fall, it’s our lips’ turn to be forgotten—especially when we combine wearing masks every day with precious little humidity in the air. That’s why it’s especially important to keep lips hydrated (and prevent premature aging) by expanding your fall skin care products to include a lip repair treatment that hydrates, heals, and can help repair sun damaged skin.

5. Remember To Give Your Hands Some Extra TLC

During winter, the low humidity outside and dry air inside naturally contribute to hands becoming dry and cracked. Add to that equation frequent hand washing, and you basically annihilate any remaining natural oils left in your skin. An intense hand cream is one of the most important fall skin care products, and if you have extra dry skin—or deal with conditions like carpal tunnel or arthritis—consider adding a body serum to the mix, too. One made with phytocannabinoids can have anti-inflammatory properties that may help you feel better in more ways than one. (And a body serum can double as a cuticle oil, too—it’s always a good idea to keep your nails extra hydrated in the winter months).

We recommend the Khus+ Khus Copious Body Serum product which in addition to being great for your skin this formula also works to help relieve tension, pain, sleep, stress, and mental fatigue.

After a stressful summer, this is the perfect moment to take a little time for yourself, do something that makes you feel good, and give yourself the opportunity to hit the “reset” button. Besides, a stitch in time really can save nine—when you opt for a sun-damaged skin treatment just as the summer ends, you’re accelerating your body’s ability to heal itself before the winter months to come.
